Gary Schaefer, Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate Nagoya, has served his country as a diplomat for 15 years, a career that has taken him from Poland to Japan to Iraq and back again to Japan. But the path that led him to the State Department was a series of detours that illustrate how the United States values diversity of experience and second chances in all their forms. After failing the entrance exam for diplomats by a single point at the age of 25, Schaefer went on to work for a decade in Japan as a translator, editor and journalist and later drew on that experience to pass the exam on his third try at the age of 36. Schaefer will discuss how American diplomats are recruited, what they do, and what sets them apart from their counterparts from other countries. The U.S. Consulate is Nagoya is the oldest diplomatic establishment in Central Japan, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020.
