This is the Lecture 1 of "Japan’s Environmental Policies and Global Environmental Issues" lecture series.

During the period of rapid growth after the end of the Second World War in 1945, Japan was hit with serious pollution problems resulting in major social and health issues as Minamata disease and Yokkaichi asthma. Initial responses to these problems were taken by local governments, and then following the establishment of the Environment Agency (currently the Ministry of the Environment) in the 1970s, there was a gradual improvement in the legal system to deal with pollution control. In this way, serious environmental pollution was improved thanks to cooperative efforts by the government, industry and local residents. Subsequently, however, rapid urbanization began to cause other lifestyle-related pollution and it was necessary to improve preventive measures such as environmental assessment. Looking back on these processes, we will explore lessons for Asian countries that still have serious pollution problems.
