This is the Lecture 2 of "Japan’s Environmental Policies and Global Environmental Issues" lecture series.

Japan has experienced serious pollution problems in the past, and has been actively responding to global environmental problems, which have become more serious since the 1980s, based on that experience. In 1997, Japan hosted the 3rd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Kyoto and contributed to the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol, which is an important international framework. In 2010, the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and the Nagoya Protocol and Aichi Targets were adopted. Recently, in order to deal with the growing problems related to climate change, Japan’s Prime Minister Suga pledged to cut Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero (carbon neutral) by 2050, aiming to contribute to global decarbonisation. We will consider the trends in global environmental issues that are becoming more serious year by year, looking at Japan's efforts, as well as the possibility of international cooperation in Asia and elsewhere.
