This is the Lecture 4 of "Japan’s Environmental Policies and Global Environmental Issues" lecture series.

The Asian region is continuing to experience rapid population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and especially changing consumption patterns and lifestyles, including shifting diets toward highly water-intensive foods such as meat. Asia is also beginning to observe severe loss and damage from climate change, as well as a series of long-standing and emerging environmental challenges (e.g. water pollution, waste management, air pollution, marine plastic debris, antibiotic resistance bacteria, etc.), which have led to significant problems, slowing down the progress and efforts toward achieving relevant environmental targets and goals set under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030. This lecture will equip audiences and students with an insightful understanding on ongoing environmental challenges facing the region, and initiate further discussion on how we can turn these challenges into opportunities toward an Environmentally Sustainable Future in Asia, through a series of case studies in selected ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam.
