Sachiko Kuno earned her Ph.D. in biochemical engineering from Kyoto University, and conducted post-doctoral research at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. In the mid-1980s, she co-established R-Tech Ueno Ltd. in Japan, and Sucampo Group in 1996. In 2013, Kuno also co-founded VLP Therapeutics to combat the 21st century global public health problems through revolutionary vaccine technology. As a social entrepreneur, Kuno is the co-founder and Chair Emeritus of Halcyon, a nonprofit dedicated to the power of human creativity. Kuno also serves as CEO of S&R Foundation, co-founded in 2000 to support talented individuals with great potential and high aspirations in the arts, sciences, and social entrepreneurship. she also co-founded Phoenixi Co Ltd in 2018, a Kyoto-based residential incubator for social entrepreneurs and intrepreneurs. Kuno has been most recently recognized as Harvard Business School of Japan’s 2016 Stateswoman of the Year, AVON Awards to Women (‘16), and one of Washingtonian’s 2017 Tech Titans.
